Pathway towards a cleaner steelmaking industry

As the world’s leading steel company, we have a significant responsibility to innovate, implement and navigate a successful pathway towards a cleaner steelmaking industry. Our journey towards becoming carbon-neutral by 2050, having aligned with the Paris climate goals and the European Green Deal by committing to reduce European CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030 and be carbon-neutral by 2050, is well underway.

XCarb™ is designed to bring together all of ArcelorMittal’s reduced, low and zero-carbon products and steelmaking activities, as well as wider initiatives and green innovation projects, into a single effort focused on achieving demonstrable progress towards carbon-neutral steel.

The initiatives that are part of XCarb™ aim to reduce the carbon footprint of ArcelorMittal and of our customers.

XCarb™ initiatives

• XCarb™ green steel certificates represent real savings in our CO2 emissions through targeted investment that can be attached to steel shipments. This enables customers to report a reduction in their Scope 3 carbon emissions in accordance with the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard.
• XCarb™ recycled and renewably produced describes steel made via the EAF route that plugs into renewable electricity, either directly or through verified certificates, with a carbon footprint that can be as low as approximately 300 kg of CO2 per tonne of finished steel when the metallics are 100% scrap.
• XCarb™ innovation fund will invest in companies developing breakthrough technologies that will accelerate the transition to net-zero steelmaking. ArcelorMittal is committing $100 million a year towards this fund.
